Introduction to Taipei Introduction to Tao Yuan Introduction to Hsin Chu

A. Geography
Taipei is the capital of Republic of China. It is also the political, economic, financial, and culture center of R.O.C. Taipei is located northern in Taiwan. Taipei is nestled in a basin with mountains on all sides and covers an area of 27,177 hectares. The population is 2.63 million (approx.).
Taipei has a subtropical climate, with an average temperature of 23.6 degrees centigrade (74.5 degrees Fahrenheit.). The average temperature in summer is between 25.2 to 28.6 degrees centigrade and the average temperature in winter is between 15.3 to 18.5 degrees centigrade.

Taipei is divided into 12 administrative divisions which are :
(1) Peitou district
(2) Shih Lin district
(3) Nei-Hu district
(4) Song Shan district
(5) Zhong Zheng district
(6) Ta-Tong district
(7) Wan Hua district
(8) Zhong-Zheng district
(9) DaAn district
(10) ZinYi district
(11) Nan Gang district
(12) Wenshan district

After the evaluation, we decided to focus on some districts which have better living environments. The evaluation standards are: the quality of societies, living environments, conveniences, education, transportation, where to buy etc. But first of all, we are going to introduce some information of Taipei.

B. Transportation
Taipei is the capital of R.O.C. The transportation here is more convenient than any place in Taiwan. If you don’t have a car, MRT or bus will be your best choice. Now, MRT has four lines which can make your travel easily from the north to the south, the east to the west of Taipei. Most important places in Taipei City have MRT stations. For example, you can take MRT to the zoo, the opera house, the department stores, the world trade center, the hotels etc. as long as you have a ticket. Every ride needs NT$20 to NT$45 which depends on the length of the trip. The ticket can be bought at any MRT station.

Besides the MRT, you can also choose the bus. There are over 50 lines of buses in Taipei. The ticket for the adult is NT$15 and NT$12 for the children. You can also use the stored value ticket which is easily bought at convenience shops.

It is convenient to have a car. The only thing you have to consider is the “parking problem”. First, there are too many cars and too little space in Taipei. Secondly, most of the parking lots are charged in Taipei.

There are two highways passing through Taipei. The Zhong Shan highway passes through the middle of Taipei. Five Exits are located at the DA-Tong, Zhong-Shan, Song Shan, and Nei-Hu district. There is still an overpass connecting the DaAn district and the highway.
The second highway is located at the southern part of Taipei. It has different route with the Zhong Shan highway. Every car will be charged NT$40 at each toll station on the highways. (There are 2 toll stations from Taipei to Lin-Kou.) Shuttle buses from Taipei to Lin-Kou are also available.

Most of them are situated at the Shih-Lin district, for many foreigners in Taipei live in this area. Some of these schools have school buses. Take Taipei American School for example, they have very good school bus service. In general, they serve the Tien Mou (Part of Shih Lin district) and Peitou district with limited service to Yang Ming Shan and TamShui (part of Taipei County). The Taipei City area served is bordered on the east by Keelung Road ,on the south by Roosevelt Road, and on the west by the Chung Shan North/South Road. That means DaAn, Zhong Shan, Song Shan, and part of Zhong Zheng district can also have the service.

Every school’s tuition and fees is different. But the cost is about NT$ 200,000 to NT$ 250,000 each semester, including transportation fee and food service. You can easily have the information on the school’s web site.
